Make the Best out of Your Wardrobe

index your wardrobe

Do you want to make the best out of your wardrobe and wear all those garments you own? If you have been standing in front of your wardrobe this morning and concluded again that you have nothing to wear, let me tell you something: you may be right! But the good news is that you came to the right place. A place that promises ‘serenity, now!’ when it comes to your wardrobe.

So let’s get started! There are different reasons why we often despair in front of our wardrobe. I will only share some and you are welcome to add more in the comments below.

Why do we have a love-hate relationship with our wardrobe?

It is because we have a large wardrobe and we tend to forget certain items. When did you last have a close look in the back of your closet? Do not worry, I will not make you look and then throw away the garments that do not sparkle joy, that’s Marie Kondo.

It is because we buy impulsively items we like without asking ourselves whether these items will be a good combo for the rest of our wardrobe. We are all guilty of this, but we will debate this in another blog.

It is because we do not know whether the new bought garment matches our body shape and skin undertone.

It is because we buy for a life we idealised and that wardrobe does not reflect the current lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong, I am all in to buy for a life you want to build in the future (some coaches emphasise that this will help get closer to that goal/life), but then be brave and wear those clothes even when others are watching and that idealised life is on the cooking.

And last but not least, it is because we all need a bit of help with styling.

Tricks to wear all your garments

So let’s go back to that despair moment of having nothing to wear because you own a large wardrobe and  have the tendency to forget about some items. And while we decompile it and share you my first trick with you, you will become more serene about our wardrobe, believe me!

So first trick:

  1.  Create a digital dossier with all your garments. I use canva.com and photoscissor.com to index all the garments I own. So I have a dossier with my capsule (or capsules) for each season (spring, summer, autumn, winter). Whenever I buy a new item, I add it immediately to the file with single items. How does a file with single garments look like? Like this:

Then, when I have the time I create files with ready-to-wear outfits like you see below. I need time to try these on. Sometimes what it looks good on canva.com, in reality may be a painful combo!

The one above is one of my two wardrobe capsules for autumn 2021. But the outfits are not categorised, there is no label on which of these would fit an office look or a party look. So this year I improved my methodology when creating the dossier and  I started creating specific files for each part of my life:

a) office outfits

office digital file

b) running errands and leisure

wardrobe digital file

c) party or going out

digital wardrobe file

And this list continues. I have also business travel, vacation, sport, formal work events categories in my wardrobe dossier. But depending on your narratives and lifestyle, your wardrobe digital dossier can end up pretty different.

Does style come naturally?

Another reason why we have a love-hate relationship with our wardrobe is that we all need a little bit of styling advice. For some of us style doesn’t come naturally, which is totally fine, no flaw here! We may be better at cooking pies or analysing numbers and interpreting laws or financial graphics than fashion style. And we should be proud of those skills! But if you need some advice on style, count on me to uphold you. Remember that style does not have to be an innate skill, if one continuously ‘nurtures’, it can be achieved over the years.

And because in Europe we had to switch to autumn season, here it is trick number two:

2. Transition your clothes from one season to another without buying new pieces. For example by combining the autumn jackets or cardigans from your wardrobe with summer dresses or skirts and blouses or shirts. During autumn I will still wear my summer dresses, but more layered. Silky dresses are meant for summer to keep you cool. But if you add a trench, stockings and boots, you would still be able to  wear it at least one more month. Also depending on how the weather is where you are living, you can even  push it to October with no stockings and stilettos but a more full coat.
